Your first year of law school is coming to an end, and all anyone is talking about is landing that first legal internship. The concerns of finding a position are high, let alone finding a firm you end up loving. But, thanks to Neighborhood Attorneys (“NA”), I’d consider myself one of the lucky ones.
My name is Brittany, and I am currently a law student at Duquesne University. I started working as an intern for NA at the beginning of summer.
From the moment I walked into this office I could tell my experience was going to be different. There was a much more relaxed atmosphere than I had imagined—a genuineness I wasn’t expecting to find. Jessica, Leigh, and Bill weren’t co-workers, but family. They not only shared work, but their lives as well. It was a life-style balance I had yet to experience in the legal field. And let me tell you, it gave me a significant sense of relief.
Lawyers tend to have this reputation of being overworked, and although that reputation may be true more often than not, NA showed me that this didn’t always have to be the case. Now, don’t get me wrong, NA puts in the work. I was able to partake in every aspect of being a lawyer, from sitting in on court hearings to client consultations to learning the “ins and outs” of drafting some of the most common legal documents! However, I was also able to learn how to take time for yourself, whether that was taking a mid-day walk, spending extra time with the family, or grabbing a sweat treat with a co-worker. By remembering to make time for such activities, I was able to form amazing friendships with each person of the NA team and start developing a healthy work ethic that I truly believe will make me a better lawyer and a better person! … And, I definitely owe that all to Neighborhood Attorneys.
